How We Think About Design Trends as Custom Home Builders

When it comes to home design trends, we take a considered and intentional approach. At Maric, we stay informed by reviewing global design forecasts each year, from colour predictions and material innovations to evolving interior styles. This awareness allows us to understand where the industry is headed, but it does not dictate our work.

As custom home builders and renovators, our role is not to chase trends. Our role is to interpret them through the lens of craftsmanship, longevity, and how our clients actually live.

Every home we design is created for real people, real routines, and long term comfort. Trends come and go, but thoughtful design endures.

Using Trends as Inspiration, Not a Rulebook

Trends are useful when they spark ideas or introduce materials that genuinely improve how a home looks and functions. In our show homes, we often explore new products and concepts first. These projects give us space to test materials, collaborate closely with suppliers, and push ideas forward in a way that still feels grounded and livable.

Many elements showing up in 2026 design forecasts are things we have been working with for years. Warm wood tones, layered neutrals, intentional colour, natural stone, and architectural detailing are all part of our established design language. Seeing them highlighted in trend reports simply reinforces what we already know works.

Our Approach to Colour and Materials

Neutral wall colours continue to play an important role in our designs. This is not about playing it safe. It is a strategic choice. When a home includes custom millwork, statement lighting, detailed tile, sculptural cabinetry, or expressive stone, a softer backdrop allows those investments to stand out.

That said, we also embrace colour when it serves the home.

While many brands are pointing to deeper greens, earthy tones, and richer hues for 2026, we have been exploring colour in meaningful ways for years. In a renovated 1970s home, where each room originally had a distinct colour story, we leaned into that history rather than erasing it. A deep green lower level bar and wine space became a defining feature, feeling cohesive because of its clarity and quality of execution.

In a recently completed custom home on Valley Brook, bold colour shows up through millwork in a variety of ways. High gloss pre finished cabinetry appears in some spaces, while matte painted flat panel doors define others. Each area has its own personality, but the palette is carefully balanced so the home feels connected rather than busy. This kind of intentional colour use allows personality to shine without overwhelming the space.

We also recognize that bold colour is not right for every client or every home. Our process always starts with understanding comfort levels, lifestyle, and long term goals.

Natural Stone Treated as Art

Long before statement stone became widely discussed, we were already treating stone as a focal point rather than a background material.

In one renovation, a unique natural slab was mounted on the wall like artwork, becoming a sculptural feature rather than a surface. That same mindset carried into a recent show home, where Da Vinci quartzite was used across a full ensuite wall and vanity.

The result was dramatic, immersive, and still refined.

In another Valley Brook custom build, Calacatta Viola stone was used throughout the kitchen, entertainment unit, and wine feature. Repeating the stone in multiple areas allowed it to anchor the home visually, creating continuity while still feeling special. These decisions are not about following a trend, but about letting exceptional materials speak for themselves.

Warm Woods and Neutral Palettes as a Foundation

Warm woods and balanced neutral palettes have long defined Maric homes. While many forecasts describe this as a future shift, it has been part of our work for decades.

Wood brings warmth, texture, and depth.

When paired with a thoughtful neutral palette, it creates spaces that feel calm, inviting, and enduring. These combinations adapt well over time, allowing homeowners to evolve their furnishings and styling without needing major renovations.

This approach also supports resale value and long term satisfaction, which is especially important in custom homes designed to last.

Looking Ahead to Our 7 Ash Cove Show Home

Our upcoming show home at 7 Ash Cove brings many of these ideas together. You will see layered materials, warm wood tones, expressive stone, and moments of deeper colour used with intention. Some spaces lean moodier, such as a colour drenched powder room, while others remain light and restrained.

Wall panelling, crown moulding, and carefully selected finishes add depth and character without overpowering the home. While these elements align with current design conversations, they are rooted in our own philosophy rather than trend driven decisions.

Designing Beyond Trends

We believe good design should feel personal, purposeful, and well crafted. Trends can offer inspiration, but they should never override function, comfort, or quality.

At Maric, we filter new ideas through decades of experience and a deep respect for craftsmanship. The result is homes that feel current without being dated, expressive without being excessive, and tailored without being fleeting.

Our goal remains the same, to create homes that stand the test of time, both visually and in how they support everyday life.
